Top 10 PV makers sell 3.95 mln vehicles in 08′

China Association of Automobile Manufacturers has unveiled the country’s top
10 passenger vehicle sellers (including minivans) in 2008, industry website
caixun.com reported Monday.

The top ten passenger car sellers for 2008 were SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co,
FAW-Volkswagen Co, Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co, Shanghai General Motors
Corp, FAW Toyota Motor Co, Chery Automobile Co, Dongfeng Nissan Passenger
Vehicle Co, Guangzhou Honda Automobile Co, Beijing Hyundai Motor Co, Changan
Ford Mazda Automobile Co.

The above ten car makers sold a total of 3.946 million vehicles from January
through December 2008, accounting for 58 percent of total passenger vehicle
sales last year.

In December, top ten car makers sold 346,400 vehicles, accounting for 59
percent of total passenger car sales. Top ten sellers in the month were
SAIC-GM-Wuling, Shanghai VW, Dongfeng Nissan, Shanghai GM, Chery Auto, FAW VW,
Beijing Hyundai, Guangzhou Honda, FAW Toyota and Geely.

Perkins Engines starts production at Wuxi plant

Perkins Engines Company has begun production at its new manufacturing facility in Wuxi, China, near Shanghai, China Industry News reported today.

The company said the $29 million facility will also include a research and development facility as part of a multi-year investment plan.

The first-phase production will include the Perkins 400 Series range of two-, three- and four-cylinder, liquid-cooled, naturally aspirated and turbocharged indirect-injection engines.

The report said the Wuxi facilities are expected to be further expanded by the end of 2009, when they will have the capacity to build more than 30,000 engines annually. Its current capacity is 20,000 units a year.

The diesel engines built at the plant will strictly follow the latest emissions legislation in Europe and North America and will target both the Chinese OEM customers and global customers

Perkins is a Britain diesel engine maker with 75 years of history. The Wuxi plant is its third overseas plant, the other two located in Brazil and the U.S.

Changchai to make diesel engine for Lister Petter

Britain engine maker Lister Petter signed a cooperation agreement on Thursday with Changchai Co., Ltd, an engine manufacturer located in east China’s Changzhou city, for producing diesel engines in China, local Chinese media said.

Under the deal, Changchai will manufacture 50,000 diesel engines a year for Lister Petter in the initial stage. The two sides will also market each other’s products at their own home markets.

Changchai Co.Ltd, formerly known as ChangZhou Diesel Engine Factory, is a listed company founded in 1913. It has an annual output capacity of 1.5 million fuel engines, 400,000 tons of castings, 100,000 multi-cylinder diesel engines and 1.2 million single-cylinder diesel engines, according to the company’s official website.

Lister Petter is based in Gloucestershire in England and has operations in the USA, France, India and China. Its main products include diesel and gas engines, generating sets and pumps.

China to fight fastener dumping allegations of EU

The China Industrial Fastener Association plans to give evidence to defend themselves against the fastener dumping allegations from the European Union and may launch a similar anti-dumping appeal to EU if necessary, said Feng Jinyao, president of the Association, China Business Daily reported.

Feng Jinyao told reporters on the sideline of an industry meeting in the weekend that domestic fastener companies are collecting evidence to launch a legal fight against the claim and the Ministry of Commerce may present a similar lawsuit against the EU to the World Trade Organization, suing them for dumping high-end European fasteners and preventing the Chinese industry from moving up the value chain.

The European Union voted on December 3 to put import tariffs of up to 87 percent on screws and bolts from China. The duties were approved by 14 EU countries and were rejected by 12 others with one abstention and will run for five years starting next year once the decision is officially published.

A report of China Radio International cited Feng’s words as saying it’s unreasonable for the commission to propose such duties because European manufacturers haven’t suffered any damages as a result of increased imports from China.

“In recent years, we have exported more fasteners to Europe, but the market share is still low. It’s no more than 10 percent. What’s more, most sorts of our fasteners are not produced in Europe anymore, so our exports complement the European market, rather than damage its interests.”

Chinese exporters had argued that their products sold to Europe are standard fasteners mainly for general industrial use and DIY markets and are complementary to the European ones which are of high strength and are mainly for automotives, earth-moving machinery and airplanes.

The European industry contends that Chinese makers benefit from suspected subsidies in steel wire, their raw material, which is currently the focus of a separate investigation, a Reuters report said earlier.

Two Chinese subsidiaries of European producers were exempted, much to the Chinese industry’s annoyance, on the grounds they primarily use a different kind of steel.

Chinese companies were also denied market economy status, which means their prices were evaluated against cost structures of Indian companies.

Yuchai to achieve $12 bln annual sales by ’15

Guangxi Yuchai Group has announced its plans to export 100,000 engines annually before 2010, mainly in the Asian, African, South American and East European markets; to export 300,000 engines (30% of the group’s annual sales) annually after 2010 by exploring the North American and West European markets; and to achieve annual sales revenue of 55 billion yuan in the next five years and 80 billion yuan ($12 billion) in 2015, said Guangxi Daily today.

In 2006, when the company gained 10 billion yuan in sales, Yuchai decided to double its sales revenue within three years. From January to September this year, Yuchai sold 464,600 engines, up 30% year on year and achieved sales revenue of 16.89 billion yuan. Yuchai is expected to hit sales revenue of 20 billion yuan by the end of this year, fulfilling its target of doubling the sales revenue of 2006.

FAW to produce self-developed truck AMT

The truck AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) independently developed by FAW Technical Center will go into production soon, said pcauto.com.cn today. This should be exhilarating news to China’s auto transmission sector.

In recent years, Chinese car-owners have raised their demand for comfortable driving experience and the AMT has been well received and popular. But it is a pity that many Chinese auto companies have not succeeded in their efforts and investment in the AMT field.

Back in 2001, FAW, China’s second largest automaker after SAIC, started its research and development (R&D) of AMT products. And now, in addition to the truck AMT, FAW has also completed the R&D of the bus and sedan AMT products. The truck AMT will go to mass-production soon and the bus AMT can be produced on a small scale to be used in FAW’s self-developed hybrid buses. The sedan AMT of FAW will be mass-produced in 2009.

All the AMT products of FAW use the local OE system, especially the sedan AMT, which uses components of FAW Group. The AMT based on core techniques and the local OE will greatly cut the product costs.

“Our sedan AMT products have obvious cost advantages over foreign products of the same kind and this will make it possible to break the monopoly of global companies in China’s sedan AMT market,” said an executive of FAW Technical Center.

Shock absorbers are an important part of automobile and motorcycle suspensions, aircraft landing gear, and the supports for many industrial machines. Large shock absorbers have also been used in structural engineering to reduce the susceptibility of structures to earthquake damage and resonance.
Vehicle suspension
In a vehicle, it reduces the effect of traveling over rough ground, leading to improved ride quality. Without shock absorbers, the vehicle would have a bouncing ride, as energy is stored in the spring and then released to the vehicle, possibly exceeding the allowed range of suspension movement. Control of excessive suspension movement without shock absorption requires stiffer (higher rate) springs, which would in turn give a harsh ride. Shock absorbers allow the use of soft (lower rate) springs while controlling the rate of suspension movement in response to bumps. They also, along with hysteresis in the tire itself, damp the motion of the unsprung weight up and down on the springiness of the tire. Since the tire is not as soft as the springs, effective wheel bounce damping may require stiffer shocks than would be ideal for the vehicle motion alone.

Spring-based shock absorbers commonly use coil springs or leaf springs, though torsion bars can be used in torsional shocks as well. Ideal springs alone, however, are not shock absorbers as springs only store and do not dissipate or absorb energy. Vehicles typically employ both springs or torsion bars as well as hydraulic shock absorbers. In this combination, “shock absorber” is reserved specifically for the hydraulic piston that absorbs and dissipates vibration.
Structures
Applied to a structure such as a building or bridge it may be part of a seismic retrofit or as part of new, earthquake resistant construction. In this application it allows yet restrains motion and absorbs resonant energy, which can cause excessive motion and eventual structural failure.
