Changing Jeep shock absorbers is not a difficult job, but you should be sure to choose a shock that applies to your application. The type of shock absorbers used depends on the type of driving, terrain and the amount of weight carried. Standard nitrogen filled shocks are fine for the normal driving. If off-road driving is considered, then a shock with a different valving is useful. Much stronger shocks are necessary for off-road applications or strong tongue loads encountered when towing something heavy.
Step1 Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the top nut on the shock where it goes through the upper control arm. The shaft will normally turn when the nut is turned so use the Allen socket on the top of the stud to hold the shaft while the nut is removed. Remove the top washer and rubber bushing.
Step2 Lift the lower control arm just a little to compress the shock and remove the bottom two bolts that hold the shock to the lower control arm. Remove the shock down and out through the bottom of the lower control arm.
Step3 Install the new shock by first installing the metal washer on the top stud followed by a rubber bushing. Insert the shock up through the hole in the lower control arm and guide the top stud through the hole in the upper control arm. While holding the shock up inside the control arms, insert the bolts through the shocks mounting holes and into the lower control arm and tighten.
Step4 Install the last rubber bushing on the top stud and then the metal washer followed by the nut. Put the Allen socket on the top of the stud to keep it from turning and tighten the nut with a wrench. Lower the floor jack and perform the same procedure for the other side.
